Fox Pest Control’s Manchester & Surrounding Areas Flea Exterminator Service

Are you worried your pet has fleas? If your poor cat or dog seems to be scratching an awful lot, it’s very possible they have fleas hiding in their fur coat. Sadly, pets track these tiny creatures inside which makes them even harder to get rid of in the long run. There’s nothing worse than being worried that letting your pet inside will expose your family to fleas, because once you have a flea infestation, it’s extremely hard to get rid of on your own. Fox Pest Control wants you to have peace of mind knowing that your family and pets are safe from fleas.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

You might already know for sure that you have a flea problem. But here are a couple of the most common signs of a flea infestation in Manchester & Surrounding Areas.

Fleas in Fur

Since fleas are most likely to infest a pet, such as a dog or cat, the first sign is finding fleas in their fur. They usually look like little black dots on their skin and in the fur around their neck, around the tail, on their belly, and in their “armpits.”

Pet Scratching

Pets with a flea infestation in their fur may scratch excessively. Sometimes, pets scratch so much that they make themselves bleed.

Pet Salivation

In some cases, the fleas carry eggs from intestinal worms that end up inside your pet’s system when they bite themselves during scratching. This can lead to excessive salivation and little white flecks around your pet’s anus.

Sightings

Though more unusually, you might see actual fleas jumping around inside the house, usually on carpet, couches, or other furniture.

Things You Need to Know About Fleas

  • Pets typically pick up fleas before we notice them inside the house. The time pets spend outside interacting with the environment and other animals makes them much more susceptible.
  • These blood sucking insects are around 1-2 millimeters long and may look like a dark speck. If you comb your pet with a flea comb and see dark bugs inside it, you’ll know fleas are present.
  • Unfortunately, once you see fleas, they’ve probably already started laying eggs, and those eggs mature quickly. In most cases, flea pupae only take two weeks to progress from egg to adult.
  • Once they mature, they carry dangerous diseases such as:
    • Tularemia
    • Flea-borne Typhus
    • Tungiansis
  • Because of these diseases,  it’s important to diligently prevent fleas before they have the opportunity to lay eggs on your property.

Helpful Flea Prevention Tips:

  • Keep grass around the house short and keep yard free of branches, leaves, and debris.
  • Avoid walking your pet through wooded areas, especially those with tall grass, and check your pet for fleas after walks
  • Ask your vet about preventative flea treatments for your pet.

Flea Control FAQ

How do I get rid of fleas?

Although fleas can be prevented by treating your pet regularly with veterinarian-approved treatments, fleas still can find their way onto your property. Once they’ve invaded your home, it’s incredibly frustrating to get rid of them. Frequent vacuuming can help a little, but ultimately, you’ll want to call Fox Pest Control to make your home safe and comfortable again.

Are fleas dangerous?

Fleas can carry numerous diseases that can be transferred to humans, including:

Tularemia
Flea-borne (murine) Typhus
Tungiansis
Bubonic plague

What problems do fleas cause pets?

Fleas can cause many problems for pets, including:

Flea-allergy dermatitis (excessive, chronic itching)
Cat-scratch fever (cats can transfer this disease to humans by scratching)
Tapeworms

What are IGRs and how do they work on fleas?

“IGR” stands for “Insect Growth Regulator,” which acts like an insect hormone that stops fleas from growing properly. It’s one of many effective chemical flea control techniques.

How can I tell if my pet has fleas?

Pets with fleas will scratch and bite themselves excessively, even to the point of bleeding. They may also salivate excessively.

What should I do to prevent fleas on my pet?

Especially if your pet has long or thick fur, check them regularly for fleas. Places fleas are most likely to latch onto a dog or cat are around the ears, near the tail, along the underbelly, and in the “armpits”. Sift through their fur with a flea comb.

What do fleas look like?

Adult fleas are about 1-2 millimeters long and might look like a dark speck.

Are fleas only found in dirty homes?

Fleas can infest a sanitary hotel or cruise cabin just as easily as they can infest a dirty motel. Pest professionals often advise people to help control fleas in their homes by cleaning and vacuuming — not because the home is dirty, but because vacuuming helps keep the pests at bay.

Why does cleaning help prevent fleas?

Regular cleaning can get rid of flea eggs that have fallen on the ground, and could pick up flea larvae as well. If you know your pet has had a history of fleas, clean their bedding thoroughly and frequently.

What is a flea larva?

After a flea hatches, it emerges as a worm called a larva (plural: larvae). The larvae wiggle around on the ground looking for skin particles and adult flea droppings.

How long do fleas live?

With enough food (blood), an adult flea can live about two or three months on average.

How long is the flea life cycle?

Under normal circumstances, a flea only takes two weeks to go from egg to adult. However, depending on the conditions, flea pupae can live up to a year or more in a dormant state.

We have never needed pest control in the past and we randomly called Fox. We couldn't be happier with Phil the technician that came to service our home. Phil was extremely knowledgeable, thorough and patient. He answered all of our questions and put us at ease. If all of Fox's technicians are like Phil then you'll be in good hands.

We've been using FOX for the last few years for seasonal pest maintenance. Every time we see some sort of pest activity outside our regular seasonal treatment, they come quick and take care of it. The workers are always kind and courteous and answer my questions and concerns. We've recommended this company to a number of family and friends who have also used FOX for treatment.
